Morning Devotion Reflections

Day 21: Restored and Sent — John 21:17

Scripture of the Day: “Feed my sheep.”

Reflection: John 21 serves as a pastoral and theological conclusion of the Gospel, bringing the narrative full circle by addressing failure, restoration, and mission. After the resurrection, the disciples return to fishing, a symbolic regression to their former life. Yet it is in this ordinary setting that the risen Christ reveals Himself again, reminding them that His presence is not confined to extraordinary moments but extends into the rhythms of daily life.

The focal point of the chapter is the restoration of Peter. Having denied Jesus three times during the events recorded in John 18, Peter now faces a threefold question from Jesus: “Do you love me?” This is not mere repetition; it is intentional and redemptive. Each question corresponds to each denial, and each response becomes an opportunity for restoration. Jesus does not ignore Peter’s failure, nor does He condemn him. Instead, He confronts it with grace, transforming guilt into renewed calling.

Significantly, each affirmation of love is followed by a commission: “Feed my lambs,” “Take care of my sheep,” “Feed my sheep.” Love for Christ is inseparable from responsibility toward His people. This establishes a crucial theological principle: genuine devotion to Christ expresses itself in pastoral care, discipleship, and participation in His mission. Restoration is not merely about personal healing; it is about re-engagement in the purposes of God.

This moment reveals the character of Christ as the Shepherd who restores fallen leaders and entrusts them again with responsibility. Peter is not sidelined because of his failure; he is recommissioned because of Christ’s grace. The trajectory of the Gospel thus moves from belief to belonging, and from belonging to mission.

Further, John concludes by pointing beyond the written account, stating that there are many other things Jesus did which are not recorded. This reinforces the idea that the work of Christ is ongoing. The risen Lord continues His ministry through His followers, empowering them to bear witness and shepherd His people.

In this way, John 21 summarizes a vital truth: belief in Christ leads not only to eternal life but also to active participation in His redemptive mission.
